Different Types of Stainless Steel Plates

Stainless steel plates are some of the generally used products in various fields. They are highly corrosion resistant, very hard, and also aesthetically pleasing. These plates are supplied in a variety of sizes to fit multiple applications. In this blog, we discuss the various forms of stainless steel plates and their features.

Types of Stainless Steel Plates

1. Austenitic Stainless Steel Plates

The most widely used category of stainless steel is austenitic stainless steels. These plates are extensively high in corrosion resistance along with excellent weldability and formability. The most important grades in this category include:

  • 304 Stainless Steel Plates: SS 304 plates are well known for their corrosion resistance and low cost and hence are used in kitchenwares, chemicals, and architecture.
  • 316 Stainless Steel Plates: With added molybdenum, 316 plates offer superior resistance to chlorides and harsh environments, making them ideal for marine and chemical processing applications.
  • Stainless Steel 201 Plates : These are austenitic stainless steel 201 plates with a lower nickel and primarily composed of iron, chromium, and nickel, with additional elements like manganese and nitrogen, ensuring long-lasting performance in challenging conditions.

2. Ferritic Stainless Steel Plates

Ferritic stainless steels are known for their high resisting force for stress corrosion cracking and thermal conductivity problems. They are mostly magnetic and much cheaper as compared to austenitic grades. Most common examples are:

  • 430 Stainless Steel Plates: These are widely used for decorative purposes and in cars due to their good corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal.
  • 409 Stainless Steel Plates: The best high heat-resistant plates, which is used widely for exhaust systems, heat exchangers, etc.

3. Martensitic Stainless Steel Plates

These are very strong steels that resist corrosion moderately, usually by hardening. They are treated by heat treatment for wear resistance applications. The main grades are as follows:

  • 410 Stainless Steel Plates: These plates are used in cutlery, valves, and surgical instruments due to their hardness and durability.
  • 420 Stainless Steel Plates: Often referred to as “cutlery-grade” steel, 420 plates are used in knives and surgical items.

4. Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Duplex stainless steels show characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic grades giving plates high strength with excellent corrosion resistance. These types of plates are mainly used:

  • Marine applications
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Offshore platforms

Most popular grades are S31803 and S32205, which are resistant against pitting and crevice corrosion.

5. Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel Plates

These plates find use where a high strength and moderate resistance to corrosion is a requirement. Precipitation hardening grades such as 17-4PH plates are used in aerospace components , medical devices, and advanced engineering.

Applications of Stainless Steel Plates

Some applications of stainless steel plates in various fields include:

  • Construction: SS plates are used in structural components and cladding.
  • Food and Beverage: These plates are used in process equipment and storage tanks.
  • Automotive: For exhaust systems and decorative trims.
  • Energy: In power plants and renewable energy systems.

From heavy-duty applications to decoration, stainless steel plates come in so many forms, making them appropriate for a wide range of applications. Selection of the right kind of stainless steel plate depends on its properties, such as corrosion resistance, strength, and environment-specific conditions. Once the characteristics are well understood, the informed decision can be made to fulfill the requirements of a specific project.
