Constituting a low nickel and high chromium content, the 301L grade of stainless steel plates are a cheaper alternative to the expensive high-nickel chromium alloys. The distinctive chemical modification in the 301L plates than the 301 plates is the reduction in the amount of carbon. Carbon contributes to the strength but can also be the reason for the formation of carbide precipitate, known to speed up the corrosion process. Therefore, with the lowering of carbon content, the chances of carbide precipitation are lowered, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance property of the plates. Apart from reducing carbon, the general increase of chromium in grade 301L contributes to the same.

The stainless steel 301L plates are famously used for their ductility, which is remarkable and better than the 301 grade. Corrosion resistance displayed by the plates is worth noting since they are resistant to stress corrosion and tackle pitted corrosion. This resistance makes it a valuable asset in operations involving liquid solvents that can cause corrosion in metal alloys. With good corrosion and excellent flexibility, the 301L plates inherit the toughness of the 301 grade, which is excessive and a trait that helps the plate withstand stress and strain. The increase in flexibility comes along with an enhancement in its weldability, making it easier to weld.
The ductile nature of 301L plates is useful in applications such as pressure vessels, airframe sections, railcar components, automotive wheel covers, wiper blade holders, toasters, stove element clips, screen frames, etc.
