Nitrogen, a strengthening element, is a distinct chemical modification in stainless steel 317LN plates. The addition of nitrogen is combined with the lowering of carbon to produce the remarkable grade in consideration. The addition of nitrogen grants it additional resistance against pitted corrosion along with its characteristic toughness. Lowering carbon is also associated with the resistance the alloy displays against corrosion. In turn, it reduces the depletion of chromium on the surface since it is primarily responsible for the corrosion resistance property exhibited by the plates in the first place. This effect caused by carbon reduction is enhanced and can be seen during processes involving elevated temperatures, such as welding.

A characteristic feature for which the stainless steel 317LN is highly praised is its resistance against corrosive agents, particularly acids such as sulfuric acid, phosphorus acid, and hydrochloric acid, among others. The resistance it shows against chloride ions and sulfuric acid is impressive and allows the plates to be utilized in applications dealing with chlorination and sulfurization. The tensile strength of the alloy grade is another interesting feature of the plates and one which helps them to withstand conditions involving mechanical strain. The chemical and physical structure of the alloy yields the plate with thermal stability against soaring temperatures. The plates also display good weldability and formability.
