The Stainless Steel 317 Plates are called high-alloys, which are compounding molybdenum in their chemical makeup. They contain nickel, chromium, and molybdenum as the primary elements apart from iron which is considered the standard element used in steel production. Adding molybdenum to the composition enhances the resistance displayed by the plates against corrosive agents and also against the oxidizing environment. Apart from the role played by molybdenum in the corrosion resistance of SS 317 plates, the perfectly balanced proportion of chromium and nickel is also responsible for imparting a little extra resistance to the plates. Further, the austenitic structure of the grade grants it hardness and stability against heat.

The 317 grade of plates is superior to its predecessor because of the slight but effective chemical modifications. The plates are very impressive against corrosion-causing agents, especially acids such as sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and hydrochloric acid. Still, unfortunately, they cannot function well in the presence of nitric acid. The resistance against acids is also displayed when dealing with organic liquids, oil, and fats, making it suitable for food and chemical industries. The alloy also possesses good tensile strength and is highly stable at higher temperatures, far exceeding those employed in standard operating conditions. The alloy plates can be treated only by cold methods and not by hot treatment, but it does show good weldability.
Concerning the properties and the stability expertly displayed by the stainless steel 317 plates, they are utilized in food processing, the pulp and paper industry, petroleum refining, power generation, chemical industries, flue gas desulphurization systems, etc.
