Whereas manganese increases the characteristic toughness and hardness of the 317 plates along with its resistance. Carbon and molybdenum, along with the primary elements, nickel, chromium, copper, and other elements in trace amounts, stabilize the alloy plate as a whole.

The property for which the stainless steel 317L plates is popularly used in various applications is their resistance against corrosion. This resistance displayed by the plates protects it against the action of chloride ions on the alloy. The presence of other similar acidic ions, such as those of sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid, is also dealt with. Sulfurizing environments cause no harmful effects on the 317L plates since they defend themselves against sulfur ions. The hardening of the plates makes it difficult to undergo machining but increases its stability and weldability. The 317L grade cannot be heat treated by common methods and has to be cold treated. The formability displayed by the plates is also an impressive trait.
