Known as chromium alloys, the 409M grade of stainless steel constitutes an increased amount of chromium in its chemical composition. Chromium is a crucial element of stainless steel which is known to play an important role in imparting the alloy with strength and stability at higher temperatures along with corrosion resistance. The chromium element is accompanied by other factors, manganese, carbon, silicon, sulfur, nickel, and phosphorus, which stabilize the alloy. Of these elements, manganese is associated with the toughness of the plates, whereas silicon protects the alloy against corrosion at soaring temperatures. In terms of the physical structure, the 409M plates are said to be ferritic, that is, the non-hardening form of stainless steel.
