The plates made out of the 409L grade of stainless steel are well known for the presence of carbon and nitrogen in the chemical mixture of chromium, nickel, and titanium, along with trace amounts of secondary elements. The carbon in the plates is of a much lower concentration than the original 409 grade, and this lowering of carbon allows the plates to possess stronger resistance to corrosion. Carbon is an element that, when present, promotes carbide precipitation, which only fastens the corrosion present, and nitrogen, when present in the right quantity, places a crucial role in providing the alloy with resistance against pitted corrosion. Therefore, adding nitrogen and reducing carbon is responsible for enhancing the corrosion resistance property of the plates granted to them by the balanced proportion of chromium and nickel.

Providing an impressive resistance against corrosion, the stainless steel plates of grade 409L are efficient in mild or non-corrosion environments. With good corrosive properties, the plates also demonstrate excellent weldability and formability. Elevated temperatures can cause harm to the alloy if it does not possess the thermal stability required to withstand it without degrading itself. This is not a problem with 409L plates since they not only possess heat resistance but their non-hardenability, even via heat treatment, allows them to operate without any modifications in their physical properties. All the properties manifested by the alloy plates, coupled with their low cost, make them vital in many operations.
The stainless steel 409L plates are useful in pipelines, boilers, heat exchangers, chemical refineries, food processing, nuclear power plants, the dairy industry, etc.
