Stainless steel usually contains chromium and nickel in its chemical composition, which renders them basic properties, but adding other elements gives you a grade with refined properties. One such grade is the 316-grade containing molybdenum in its composition. Molybdenum is added to the mixture to enhance the corrosion resistance property of the plates, especially against chloride ions in the corrosive agent. Chloride ions are excellent oxidizing agents with the potential to deteriorate alloys; therefore, the incorporation of molybdenum in stainless steel helps it defend itself against it. The stainless steel 316 plates not only contain chromium, nickel, and molybdenum but also consist of other elements present in proportionate amounts to stabilize the alloy.

The resistance displayed by the 316-grade stainless steel plates against chloride ions is commendable and makes it a favourable choice for working conditions involving chlorine in the environment. The corrosion resistance property does not stop at chloride ions alone but extends further to include many other liquid solvents and corrosion-causing conditions. Tensile strength is an essential and critical feature of this grade and allows them to withstand stressful conditions involving mechanical strain and stress. The plates maintain stability throughout rising temperatures without getting damaged because of the thermal stability and the higher melting point. Besides heat stability, the alloy plates are weldable and have good formability.
With the superiority it displays against 304 when it comes to its chemical properties, the stainless steel 316 plates have earned themselves applications such as heat exchangers, boat fittings, threaded fasteners, springs, laboratory equipment, transportation chemical containers, coastal architectural structures, water filtration screens, food preparation equipment, etc.
