A modification of the 410 grade of stainless steel, the 410S plates are made differently by the reduction in the amount of carbon; the chemical alteration results in the plates having an enhanced resistance against corrosion, especially intergranular corrosion. Alongside carbon, the alloy also contains chromium, nickel, manganese, sulfur, iron, phosphorus, and silicon in predetermined quantities. The presence of approximately 11.5-4.5% chromium in the overall composition also plays a significant role in providing the plates with both resistance and hardness. Another important feature of the plates is their martensitic structure, although the grade is a non-hardening adaptation and, therefore, does not undergo the hardening characteristic of martensitic alloys.

Predominantly known for the corrosion resistance property it impressively exhibits, the stainless steel plates belonging to the grade 410S resist corrosive agents even at elevated temperatures. The stability generously displayed by the plates in higher temperatures is due to the non-hardening property. Since the plates cannot be easily hardened because of the reduced austenite formation, they can withstand soaring temperatures without cracking. This also affects the ductility of the plates, which is impressively retained even when the temperature is rapidly cooled down, granting them good ductility, which isn’t affected by fluctuating temperatures. Apart from resisting corrosion, the plates can also resist oxidation. They are also said to have good weldability, and the corrosion resistance property of the plates is said to improve when welded.
The usefulness and the properties of the 410S plates are employed in thermal processing, petroleum refineries, heat exchangers, press plates, gate valves, etc.
