Operating impressively at 1150 degrees C for continuous service and 1035 degrees C for intermittent service, the ASTM A240 UNS S31000 Plate extensively uses radiant tubes, combustion chambers, burners, and cryogenic structures.
The versatility of the 310 Stainless Steel Plate can be attributed to its unique properties. With approximately 25% chromium and 20% nickel in its composition, this plate showcases remarkable resistance to both corrosion and oxidation. High and low-carbon versions exist, with the latter being less prone to sensitization and embrittlement. Notably, the AISI 310 Plate is highly sought after in environments containing reducing sulfur and moderately carburizing atmospheres, making it an ideal choice for applications in the petrochemical industry.
However, avoiding frequent liquid quenching with the SS 310 Plate is essential, as it may suffer from thermal shock. On the other hand, the 310 grade is an excellent option for various cryogenic applications, thanks to its enhanced magnetic permeability and toughness.

When it comes to hardening, the DIN 1.4840 Plate doesn’t respond to heat treatment, but it can be hardened through cold working, although this method is rarely employed. Forging the 310 grade typically takes place between 975 – 1175 degrees C and post-forging annealing is recommended to relieve stress caused during the forging process. The UNS S31000 Plate, however, can be readily formed using standard equipment and methods, boasting similar machinability to that of the 304 grade, albeit requiring robust machinery and heavy tools.
The 2B Finish Stainless Steel 310 Plate offers excellent weldability using standard procedures and equipment, exhibiting resistance to carburization, oxidation, and sulfidation. While it boasts overall corrosion resistance, it must be cautious of chloride-related stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing corrosive liquids exceeding 100 degrees C.
